"Emotion and Skeleton"
Aug. 8 to 9, Sat & Sun
venue: Kanagawa Science park
When we look at a human skeleton we can see all the possibilities for human motion; reflected in the construction of the joints, the proportions and shape of its bones. Without a skeleton we could not learn to crawl, stand or walk. From birth, each of us learns to move. Outside of our awareness, our skeleton, nervous system, feelings, sensations and movements coalesce in each and every action, forming our experiences, fulfilling our desires and needs. These experiences and actions repeated over and over again shape us, becoming our learned habits. We and others, come to recognize our “self”, acting in recognizable ways, in accordance with our “formed” or habituated self in action.
So how do emotions fit in with our skeletons? Our emotions are integral to the orchestration of our movements; being inner motions – physiological responses to stimuli, designed to propel us away from danger and toward reward. They underlie every action we do, and with our sensory motor systems animate our skeleton, expressing our “self”. Emotions can also become habituated in our responses, woven into the neural pathways and patterns of our daily actions.
Many of our apparent shortcomings or “weaknesses” are acquired as a result of a learned mode of doing. Current research, confirms the findings of Moshe Feldenkrais, showing that our self image and learned habits are not static, but constantly reforming, through the neuroplasticity capacities of the brain, according to our actions. Our capacity for learning new modes of doing is unique, and the Feldenkrais Method offers an intelligent, practical and safe approach to do so.
In this 2 day workshop you will experience Moshe Feldenkrais’s unique “Awareness Through Movement (ATM)” Lessons. These lessons influence our brain’s way of functioning and patterns of self organization in fundamental ways. ATM lessons gently guide and bring awareness to our ways of moving, enabling us to develop greater freedom and choice in our thinking, sensing, moving and feeling.
The workshop will take the form of the first days of a training program and offer an introduction to the Feldenkrais Method. If interested, you will be able to join the current Tokyo 3 Feldenkrais Professional Training Program through participating in this workshop.
“The body reflects the attitudes of the mind. Improve the function of the body and you must improve the state of the mind………What I’m after isn’t flexible bodies but flexible brains. What I’m after is to restore each person to their human dignity.” Moshe Feldenkrais
